Summer Camp – Children's House offers a camp program for six weeks during the summer.  Daily activities such as cooking, movement, crafts, and outdoor water play are some of the fun things we have scheduled.  Our expansive, shady wooded playground is perfect for exploring nature and enjoying a relaxing summer.  Camp will be available to our currently enrolled students first, newly enrolling students for the coming year second, and finally students not otherwise associated with our school.  Please contact the office for information on how to sign up.

Class Size – Classes usually average 20 students. We maintain a 1:10 teacher-student ratio.

Calendar – We follow the Fairfax County Public Schools calendar. Student holidays are used for Parent/Teacher conferences. In addition, school closes at 1:00 PM once a month for Staff Meetings. Please refer to our calendar for scheduled holidays and school work days.

Emergency / Inclement Weather Policy – Children’s House Montessori School follows Fairfax County Public Schools for closures due to emergencies and inclement weather.  On occasion, when Fairfax County Public School closings do not apply to us, we will be open, depending on the reason for the closing. We have a text message system in place to inform parents. We will leave a message on the school telephone and on the front page of the website as well.

Snack – Morning snack is available to the children on an individual basis, as they are ready, from 8:30 AM until 10:30 AM. Afternoon snack will be served to Full-Day children starting at 3:45 PM. Both snacks will be nutritionally balanced and consist of two food groups. Examples of daily snack are: cheese and crackers, fresh fruit and crackers, bread and apple butter, or crackers and peanut butter (if we have no peanut allergies). Water is always available at the snack table.

Lunch – Full-Day and School-Day children who stay until 3:00 PM should bring a packed lunch in an insulated lunch bag given to parents at the start of the year. Because nutrition is so important in these growing years, we encourage parents to send a well-balanced lunch with items such as a sandwich, fresh fruit, yogurt or cheese stick, or crackers. Leftovers from dinner can be packed in an insulated container. We encourage the children to drink water, and have it available at the lunch table. Regrettably, we do not have the ability to refrigerate or heat food for children.

Special Classes – Children’s House provides three special classes, free of charge, to children who attend our school. These classes, called "Specials," take place during the morning school hours.

  • Music – Children are exposed to the fun of music and movement classes once a week. In addition to singing and dancing, using rhythm instruments an hand bells and exposure to important composers and real instruments of all kinds make up our music and movement activities.
  • Nature Hike – We hike the trail behind our school that has been certified by The National Wildlife Federation as a Backyard Habitat.
  • Spanish - Our Spanish classes use conversation, songs, games, and manipulatives to introduce the children to basic vocabulary and practice speaking, and to just have fun!

Communication – We feel an open channel of communication between parent and school is vitally important. We have two regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences during the year, and are always available to talk when needed. A newsletter, which is available on this website, is also sent out by email on a regular basis to keep you informed of activities in the school. We use email for updates and quick reminders. Our staff is always interested in talking with you about your child’s progress. Never hesitate to call!
